Meet the Women Behind the World’s Richest Men

Melinda French — now Melinda Gates — is married to Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft. Melinda joined Microsoft after graduating with an MBA from Duke’s Fuqua School of Business. They started their courtship at the company. As general manager of information products, she contributed to several Microsoft products, such as Publisher and Expedia. However, she cut her Microsoft career short after marrying Gates in 1994 to raise her family. She is now co-chair and operator of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Launched in 2000, the foundation’s goal is “to enhance healthcare and reduce extreme poverty.” Since 2014, the Gates have donated $28 billion to the foundation and established the Gates Cambridge Scholarships at Cambridge University.
